​My Story

​​Please allow me to introduce myself - I’m Peter Durham, proud to be the fourth generation of a family of greengrocers, trading in and around Oxford since 1887. Our family has a long history in the trade: we were among the first to install a cold room, Findus Frozen Foods gave us a freezer to sell their products, and I was the first to install a bespoke computer system.

I was brought up hearing my father’s words every day as I walked through Covent Garden Market - which I still do, six days a week. He’d always say, “Have it off the top of the tree - get it off the top shelf.” Sometimes he’d change it to “Get it out of the top drawer,” but his favourite was always, “Buy the best, boy - they’ll remember the taste long after they’ve forgotten the price.”

I still work the old-fashioned way, and there aren’t many of us left doing it. I personally look at everything I buy, always with taste and yield in mind - you simply can’t judge produce down the end of a telephone line.
